The Xvatit.com is conducting an extensive study of what gadgets tend to be implemented into the school learning process. We face the question of what electronics should be given to children: book readers, notebooks, laptops, smart phones, candy bars of ordinary PC, tablet computers, i-pods, or various other mini-computers.
The excitement began when the governments of some countries, particularly Ukraine, Russia, USA and Norway, have announced their desire to upgrade the school technology drastically. Moreover, they have been providing enormous funding at 2-5 billion dollars with tenders or in some places without them.
Businessmen dream of signed contracts and lucrative deals - a continuous supply of gadgets to schools and the constant maintenance of computers. All are intrigued: who will be able to capitalize on such good fortune?
Walking through the classrooms in Kiev Lyceum "Grand", where each student has his own laptop or a net book on his desk and re-reading many expert articles of the special project on Xvatit.com (they can be found on the website under the heading "Exclusive"), I simply could not get rid of intrusive thoughts. Something was bugging me. And now, pressing the keyboard, I think bitter thoughts. Here they are, gadgets for school, all in front of me lined in a row.
And suddenly there is a thought: “Yes, it's stupid! Nothing doing! All of these gadgets in this form are not suitable for the learning process!”
In the Institute of Bogatomika, a scientific partner of web portal www.xvatit.com, each computer has been thoroughly tested and as a result - derived formula of the positive and negative aspects of the gadgets, but ... it became clear we are all going the wrong way. And what is true?
I'm thinking about it: Probably, were the reasons why children need to sit at their desks specially designed, rather than at the kitchen tables, but although we can easily adapt kitchen furniture to their studies, but we do not. The same applies to the buildings - the students do not study in the clubs or stores but in the buildings created by architects to be convenient to the educational process. In fact, students are given special backpacks or schoolbags, parents do not give them the usual plastic bags or shopping bags designed just for other purposes. And actually the school uniform has special characteristics and is very different from the usual wear, although there's nothing wrong with everyday jeans, just a different direction.
Only the computers are out of luck, because all of the above types of computers have been created for completely different purpose, not for school purpose.
Book readers (pocket books) are designed for reading novels on the subway, and there you can download a lot of books. No color, no speed, no graphics with tables are of special need.
Net books are portable, handheld devices, small and fragile, designed to be comfortable on journey with them. Now when I am often in the airports, I see 90 per cent of passengers using them.
Notebooks are office sources, converters, search engines and transmitters of information; they are so heavy and excessive for the school process.
The plates were developed for trading on the Stock Exchange.
The main conclusion is simple: none of these gadgets was designed for schools. And it means it is not appropriate.
So a deadlock? No, just for school purposes, instead of textbooks, quite a new gadget is needed , and it should be designed specifically and meet requirements for vision, weight, price, comfort, memory, speed, software, wireless, and another 20 parameters.
Existing gadgets have no future in schools, like chairs to be used instead of school chairs and benches, or shorts, if the school has introduced a similar dress code instead of uniforms. The same goes for plastic bags instead of backpacks and warehouses instead of classes. Any attempt to artificially impose alien instruments always ended in failure.
Why did this happen? Because the school leaders, and politicians, tired businessman, unfortunately, have forgotten the key concept of "specification", which is familiar to every engineer or inventor. Even in the national projects on this issue in some countries for some reason, they immediately and quickly proceed to the feasibility study and tender.
I am as an engineer, businessman and scientist-futurist, I am sure that to avoid such incidents we should start with drawing up a clear specification on the device that will satisfy the basic 25 requirements for use in school educational technology.
It is already seen how it will look like, this SDI - School built-in Desk Informer.
Drawings according to exclusive and unique technical requirements have already been made. The sample will be ready soon and then first experimental batch is waiting in the wings.
The pessimists and skeptics are already eager to see how this equipment will look like and, of course, how much it will cost and who will pay for it.
My logic here is as follows. Our ancestors could not even build the schools because they were so expensive, also they could teach their children as in ancient Greece, with a stick in the sand and to show the formula on fingers. But for some reason they built schools, although money was also a pity.
Some countries base optional colliders and stadiums, which are very expensive. Soon the time comes for expensive schools. Everything what we do for the first time is always expensive, like the first colored TV –set, and the first mobile phone.
I have already done a business plan how to do a School Desk -Informer low-price and all available.
But let's do everything step by step. And we will succeed.
